This is an exempt level position.

ADM has an opening for a Group Manager, Process Chemistry at our Corporate Research Center located in Decatur, IL. The position reports directly to the Group Director leading the Process Chemistry & Catalysis (PC&C) Team.

Position Summary
We are seeking an experienced Process Chemistry Group Manager to lead/mentor research scientists that are advancing early-stage discovery projects through pilot scale. Experience leading teams responsible for developing a variety of diverse chemical technologies is essential. Technical leadership and expertise desired in the areas of organic synthesis, scale up of chemical processes, diverse purification techniques, and experience with standard and advanced analytical instrumentation. This individual must also have management experience with oversight over scientists possessing deep technical knowledge.

The Process Chemistry Group Manager will be an integral member of the Process Chemistry & Catalysis Team and will serve as a member of the PC&C Leadership Team. The incumbent will collaborate with groups across ADM Research to advance processes and products that are designed to convert ADM feedstock materials into value added products in the areas of sustainable materials and specialty ingredients.

Job Responsibilities

  • Perform all job functions in accord with company safety guidelines
  • Champion innovation at ADM both internally and with external partners
  • Provide global expertise within ADM in fields of organic chemistry, analytical chemistry, and industrial process chemistry
  • Serve as a motivated leader of the Process Chemistry Group and act as technical mentor for colleagues in the Process Chemistry lab
  • Serve as chemistry expert for Plant and Business operation leaders as necessary
  • Collaborate with PC&C Technical Director and Group Director to develop and act on long-term strategic plans
  • Interface with ADM Science and Technology Leaders to influence the strategic direction of ADM business and research focus for Sustainable Materials portfolio
  • Provide technical leadership to serve as a communication bridge between Chemistry teams within Decatur S&T and external ADM labs
  • Interface with Technical Managers and Commercial Teams to advance ADM technology towards commercial goals
  • Apply expertise in organic chemistry and process development to advance ADM’s research programs
  • Oversee lab to pilot scale projects to help generate data and support commercial opportunities
  • Oversee development of technical reports and technology transfer packages of scalable technology to pursue commercial opportunities
  • Lead projects for diverse technical teams utilizing gated project management tools
  • Report on status of research activities through verbal updates, written reports, and presentations
  • Ensure lab technicians, contract employees, and other coworkers follow ADM laboratory standards
  • Participate in safety reviews with colleagues on a variety of projects
Skills and Proficiencies
  • Ph.D. in organic chemistry or chemical engineering with at least 10 years of industry experience in process development role
  • Candidate must have at least 5 years of line management experience in industry with multiple direct reports
  • Experienced group leader that has guided team members on projects that led to commercial success
  • Strong leadership skills to encourage open collaboration, promote constructive feedback, and motivate diverse group of team members
  • Knowledge of safe hazardous material handling and hazardous communication requirements and procedures
  • Solid understanding of statistical software, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Teams, and Microsoft Office
  • Ability to function independently while interacting with ADM management, facility management, and ADM contract employees
  • Effective communication skills to effectively engage colleagues in research, operation, and business groups as well as external organizations
  • Experience with project management tools
