Laboratory Technician III-Decatur, IL
Benchtop and Pilot Scale Fermentation

This is a non-exempt-level position.
Position Summary:
This position is in the Fermentation Group, within the Biotechnology Research division of ADM. The group is focused on validating novel production strains, fermentation scale-up/scale-down, and optimization and troubleshooting of current fermentation processes. The research work covers bacterial and fungal fermentations, microbial identification, sample analysis, and data analysis. The candidate will record, sample, and monitor fermentations running in our laboratories and pilot plant areas. The candidate will also provide project support by assisting with prep work throughout the week when sampling demand is at a minimum.
Work Schedule: 2 options 8-hour days vs 10-hour days
Sunday-Thursday, 6:00 pm-2:00 am
Monday-Thursday, 5:00 pm-3:00 am (10 hours)
Job Responsibilities:
- Record, sample, and monitor fermentations in our laboratories and pilot plant areas
- Work within a team to ensure successful fermentations at 7.5 L, 100 L, 450 L, and 1000 L scales
- Conduct troubleshooting to solve or mitigate issues. Record data and make observations
- Follow SOPs
- Communicate and relay information to Scientists and Technicians
- Read and understand fermentation protocols
- Conduct basic maintenance of fermentation and analytical equipment.
- Contribute to continuous improvement efforts on the execution of fermentations and laboratory safety.
- Work in an aseptic manner and maintain a clean workspace
- Self-motivated; ambitious
Skills and experiences required or useful for the candidate:
- BSc in microbiology, fermentation science, or related field or 2-3 years of fermentation experience
- Working knowledge of fermentation equipment, troubleshooting, and maintenance.
- Knowledge of general microbiological procedures and aseptic technique
- Excellent written and oral communication skills with both technical and non-technical personnel.
- Demonstrated ability to work with diverse, multidisciplinary teams
- Working knowledge of Microsoft Word and Excel
- Must be able to lift 50 lbs.
