Position Summary:
As the Safety Manager of the Decatur Complex, you’ll be leading the transformation of our safety culture. In this role you will be responsible for developing and implementing the safety strategy of the Decatur Complex across our seven Decatur manufacturing locations. In addition, you will serve as a leader on the North American Headquarters (NAHQ) Safety Council.
This position requires a strategic, process driven thinker who will closely collaborate with NAHQ, Operations and Technical Center Leaders to develop, communicate, and deliver success in a Complex-wide safety transformation.
The person in this role will have previous experience in Operations leadership and an extensive understanding of Life Critical Standards, Total Process Safety/Process Safety Management, as well as, Occupational Health and Safety. They must be agile in a dynamic environment while utilizing data to prioritize focus. They will spend a significant amount of time in the field mentoring, providing support, and auditing practices and policies. They will display a commitment to, lead, participate and support safety engagement. They will ensure good communication, engagement and alignment through regular performance and development conversations with colleagues, other leaders, and community leaders.
The Decatur Operations Complex, located in Decatur, IL, consists of six processing plants, onsite cogeneration and water treatment facilities, and onsite medical center. The Complex employs ~1500 Plant Operations Colleagues and an additional ~1000 Contractors.
This position reports directly to the Director of Decatur Complex Operations and is based at our NAHQ.
Responsibilities:
- Lead, support and model a strong safety culture
- Develop a high performance team
- Extensive time in the field mentoring Plant Safety Managers, auditing application of safety policies, and engaging with Plant Operations teammates
- Provide technical guidance in the fields of Health and Safety and Total Process Safety
- Own the Complex’s interaction, communication, and relationship building with government agencies and local municipality leaders including but not limited to OSHA, State Fire Marshall, the City of Decatur, Fire and Police Departments
- Active leadership in individual Plant and the Complex’s Emergency Response planning, including Emergency Operations Center
- Review and response of safety leading indicator KPIs for seven manufacturing locations
- Design and implement Complex-wide safety engagement and recognition program
- Attend and provide subject matter expertise during FEL meetings involving projects in the campus.
- Work directly with Plant Managers to drive improvements in our Processing Plants
- Collaboration with Senior Operations Leaders and Technical Centers on strategic initiatives
- Work directly with the Decatur Complex Area Environmental Manager of cross functional items such as the Complex Risk Management Plan (RMP)
- Serve as a member of the North American Head Quarters Safety Council
- Drive standardization in programs across the organization
- Review incident and near miss events to ensure proper compliance and escalated counter measures are being used for remediation
- Lead Serious Incident Investigations
- Participate in Process Hazard Analysis (PHA), Hazard and Operability Studies (HAZOP) and Dust Hazard Analysis (DHA) to provide subject matter expertise
- Minimum of five years of Plant Operations leadership and an extensive understanding of Life Critical Standards, Total Process Safety/Process Safety Management, as well as, Occupational Health and Safety
- Degree in Occupational Health and Safety or Engineering, Board of Certified Safety Professional (BCSP) Certification or equivalent work experience
- Strong knowledge and application of OSHA, NFPA, ANSI, FRA and other general consensus standards
- Demonstrate strategic planning and forward thinking
- Experience leading cross functionally across multiple levels of the organization
- Effective at developing and coaching others
- Effective contrarian for the sake of positive transformation.
- Minimal travel may be required, sometimes reactionary on short notice.
