Job Summary

In this key support role, serve as a vital link between the Decatur Police Department and the community As a Police Support Specialist, you will handle non-emergency calls, collect and process evidence, manage departmental logistics, and engage with the public at events—all without requiring law enforcement certification. Key Responsibilities

Administrative Support

  • Assist various divisions with records, Freedom of Information Act ( FOIA) requests, subpoenas, travel arrangements, and training coordination
  • Track vehicle equipment, register sex offenders, manage mail runs, and deliver ordinance violations
  • Enter background and training data into internal systems
Public & Community Interaction
  • Respond to non-emergency calls (found property, minor thefts, and road hazards)
  • Attend community events, provide facility tours, and support department social media
Evidence & Investigations
  • Collect, process, and store evidence; testifies in court
  • Monitor jail calls, prepare photo lineups, and search law enforcement databases
Field & Traffic Support
  • Perform traffic control at accidents, events, and parades
  • Enforce abandoned vehicle tows


Qualifications and Preferred Skills

Minimum Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • At least 21 years old
  • Valid Illinois Driver’s License and F.O.I.D. Card
  • Ability to obtain and maintain Law Enforcement Agencies Data System (LEADS) (less than full access) certification
  • Must pass background check, annual criminal history review, and fingerprinting
  • No felony convictions; no gang or drug affiliations
  • Prior law enforcement support experience preferred
  • College coursework in Criminal Justice or related field is a plus

  • Clear and professional verbal and written communication
  • Ability to interact respectfully with the public and coworkers
Technical & Administrative Skills
  • Ability to write and type basic police reports
  • Skilled in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook)
  • Accurate data entry and recordkeeping
Professional Qualities
  • Able to maintain confidentiality
  • Strong moral character and attention to detail
  • Willingness to work outside of business hours or weekends
  • Ability to complete all in-service training required

Employees must reside within 50 miles of Decatur's corporate limits within 12 months of appointment.
