Description

Cleans and assembles equipment and instruments; folds and assembles linen packs.

Essential Functions and Job Duties

 

  • Decontaminates scopes, cameras and equipment for department, following all manufacturer’s guidelines and OSHA Blood and Body Fluids guidelines.
  • Inspects and dismantles and reassembles, if appropriate, prior to decontamination.
  • Reports broken or damaged instruments and equipment.
  • Provides decontamination and reprocessing for ancillary areas, such as Emergency Care Center, Maternal/Child Nursing Services, Diagnostic Radiology, and Heart Center.
  • Responsible for instrument tray assembly and packaging of supplies.
  • Includes sterile indicators in packages/trays.
  • Provides accurate instrument count sheets when appropriate.
  • Documents sterility dates accurately.
  • Responsible for proper sterilization of instruments.
  • Assesses proper sterilization methods and recommendations.
  • Adheres to and documents biological testing.
  • Stores and rotates supplies; cleans and restocks assigned areas.
  • Maintains adequate inventory of reusable linen and basins.
  • Assists all personnel in locating or delivering necessary instruments or supplies.
  • Responsible for outdated supplies/instruments in assigned areas.
  • Responsible for accurate preparation of case carts.
  • Communicates items not pulled for procedure.
  • Provides appropriate substitutes for items/supplies not available.
  • Generates supply/pick list from computer.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Education and/or Other Requirements

High school diploma or equivalent is required.  Sterile Processing or Surgical Technician certification is required after two years of employment.   Prior experience is preferred. Certified Board for Sterile Processing preferred.

Environmental Factors

Exposure to uncomfortable temperature levels, above-average noise levels, and potentially injurious elements or conditions is great.

Physical Demands

The physical demands described are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.

  • Moderate physical activity; must be able to stand, bend, reach, lift and carry loads up to 35 pounds; must be able to load and unload washers and sterilizers. Must be able to stand entire shift.

 

Mental Demands

  • Must be able to understand and follow oral and written instructions.  Good memory and fact retention are necessary.  Must be able to work with frequent interruptions.
  • Ability to adhere to strict confidentiality requirements.

  • Knowledge of surgical instruments or procedures or medical supplies is helpful.  Must be accurate and have good organizational skills.

Education and/or Other Requirements
