Overview

Under the guidance and supervision of a licensed Pharmacist(s) and following all Federal and State regulations, prepares and distributes medications and maintains drug inventory and patient records.

Qualifications

Education:

  • Education equivalent to graduation from high school or GED is required.
  • Has completed training and demonstrates competence to work in the pharmacy clean room. Assigned to work during normal operational hours in the clean room (currently first shift).

Licensure/Certification/Registry:

  • Possesses a current State of Illinois Technician license or is able to obtain such license within 60 days of employment. Applicants may not begin work without proof of licensure application, either electronic (Web) verification or hard copy of application.
  • Pharmacy Technician Certification through the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board-(PTCB) or the Exam for the Certification of Pharmacy Technicians (ExCPT) is required by the second pharmacy technician license renewal except for:
    • Pharmacy technicians who obtained initial licensure prior to January 1, 2008.
    • Pharmacy students enrolled in an accredited school of pharmacy.
  • Other Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

    • Possesses a highly developed problem solving ability to work through complex situations.
    • Understands technical complexities of the department and uses this knowledge to adapt to and work in any situation.
    • Possesses the ability and desire to train, (as defined by department standards) and develop lesser-experienced pharmacy technicians. Imparts both didactic content as well as models behavioral standards for trainees.
    • Demonstrates excellent oral and written communication, problem solving, basic math, and customer relations skills.
    • Demonstrates basic computer knowledge, with the ability to operate keyboard and mouse to access and store information into an electronic database.
    • Leads by example; incorporates the Memorial Health system Behavioral Standards into daily practice.
    • Demonstrates commitment to safety in all elements of daily practice.
    • Ability to push, pull, and transport up to 50 lbs. and stand/walk for long periods of time.

Responsibilities

  1. Performs advanced Pharmacy Technician duties within the Pharmacy (or other applicable area), either at a fixed or rotating work station or schedule approved by management. Applies highly developed knowledge and niche expertise of sterile compounded preparations and related processes.

  1. Organizes and fills order requests in order of priority, clarifying issues with Pharmacist(s) as needed. Upon completion, routes order to Pharmacist for review. Upon pharmacists’ approval, delivers completed order to requestor or otherwise notifies appropriate party.

  1. Recognizes controlled substances and maintains their security at all times, according to hospital standards and federal/state regulations.

  1. Inventories and maintains the appropriate levels of stock, replenishing as necessary. Advises Pharmacist(s) and other interested parties of depletion or low levels of critical medications and supplies.

  1. Adheres to United States Pharmacopeia chapters 797 and 800 in preparing, filling, labeling, and distributing medication and related supplies.

  1. Utilizes various online databases to access patient information, drug information, policy and procedures, and other related items.

  1. Inventories and identifies expired or otherwise unusable drugs and provides for their safe and secure disposal through daily monitoring and compliance with monthly inspection assignments.

  1. Maintains compliance with federal and state requirements for record keeping of ALL electronic and paper pharmacy documents. This includes, but is not limited to, Master Formulation Records, Compounding Records, batch compounding logs, controlled substance documentation, and environmental monitoring logs.

  1. Assists Pharmacy Operations Manager in maintaining and updating sterile compounding standard operating procedures.

  1. Assists Pharmacy Operations Manager in developing and updating written training programs and train/qualify new personnel in compounding sterile products. Requalify all compounding personnel at prescribed intervals. Continuously monitors staff who are compounding sterile preparations.

  1. In cooperation with the Pharmacy Operations Manager, maintain the sterile compounding environment through cleaning and overseeing environmental monitoring. Follows standard operating procedures to investigate out-of-limit findings.

  1. Identifies areas for process improvement and makes recommendations to management for approval. At least one area must be identified on an annual basis to maintain Lead Tech status.

  1. Demonstrates safety in ALL aspects of work including patient safety, compliance with policy and procedures that insure employee safety, compliance with OSHA standards for handling hazardous substances, compliance with USP standards.

  1. Occupational Hazards: Potential for exposure to infectious patients and materials, though rare. Potential for exposure to hazardous and toxic substances including chemotherapy, cytotoxic drugs, and cleaning solutions. Potential for sticks or cuts by needles and other sharp, potentially contaminated items. Potential for musculoskeletal injuries if proper lifting and carrying techniques are not used.

  1. Performs other related work as required or requested.
